Bernard Yap is the Head of Private Client Services and Financial Services within the Tax Practice at Ernst & Young Tax Consultants Sdn Bhd. Previously served as the Indirect Tax Leader, where he led the nationwide implementation of the goods and services tax in Malaysia. With a strong background in tax compliance, regulatory matters, and consultancy, Bernard works extensively with Malaysian financial institutions, entrepreneurs, and business enterprises.
He has led numerous e-invoicing engagements for multinational corporations, large local taxpayers, banks, and insurance companies. As an advisor to trade associates, he supports the development of cohesive policies for e-invoicing implementation across the financial sector. Bernard regularly appears as a speaker and panellist in seminars and webinars to guide businesses through the e-invoicing transition. He provides tax planning services to banks, insurance companies, family businesses, private equity stakeholders, and high-net-worth individuals.
Bernard also collaborates with the EY Global Tax Policy Network, contributing to tax policy development and acting as an advisor to government agencies and regulators. His experience covers tax due to diligence audit support, indirect tax advisory, training, and the preparation of license, incentive, and exemption applications. He has engaged with the Ministry of Finance, Inland Revenue Board, and Royal Malaysian Customs Department on topics including GST, SST, TCGF, e-invoicing, CRS, CGT, Venture Capital Incentives, and Foreign Source Income. Bernard, this all assisted in implementing CRS for banks and advising clients on succession planning through Family Office structures. He's a regular speaker at forums hosted by EY, professional bodies, and regulators.
